Jackson County Announces MAS Scholarship Recipients

Anna Adams and Haleigh O'Brien - MAS Scholarship Recipients 2020

At their June 1, 2020 meeting, the Jackson County Board of Supervisors recognized Anna Adams and Haleigh O’Brien as the County’s recipients of the $500 Mississippi Association of Supervisors (MAS) County Employee Scholarship.

“It is an honor to acknowledge the accomplishments of these two Jackson County students on behalf of MAS. We look forward to what their futures hold and hope that they remain in Jackson County once they complete their education,” says 2020 Board President Barry Cumbest.

This year the MAS County Employee Scholarship program awarded $33,000 in scholarships to dependents of current or retired county employees around the state.

Adams is a 2020 graduate of Ocean Springs High School. She plans to major in Industrial and Systems Engineering while attending Mississippi State University. Her grandmother, Betty Adams, worked for the County’s Finance Department for many years before retiring.

O’Brien is a 2020 Vancleave High School Special Honors Graduate and was a member of the National Honor’s Society, cheerleader, and B.U.D.’s volunteer. She will attend MGCCC in the fall to pursue a career in Dentistry. O’Brien is the daughter of Khristina, an employee with the County Road Department, and Scott Storm.

Derrick Surrette, Executive Director of MAS said, “The MAS County Employee Scholarship program is one way that our Association can give back to the employees of our counties. We hope to have an even greater response to the program next year.”

The Mississippi Association of Supervisors is a nonprofit support association for Mississippi’s 82 counties. Since its inception in 1928, MAS has been committed to the improvement of county government across our state. MAS members have been instrumental in implementing efficient and effective grassroots government that serves the general welfare not only of the counties themselves, but of the entire state.
