Separation of Waste Advised
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is working with Jackson County and local cities to assist residents with waste and debris clean-up due to damage caused by Hurricane Isaac.
To ensure that the waste is removed and properly disposed of, residents should begin separating and managing storm-related waste. Jackson County will begin collection of storm-related waste on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Each city will collect in their high impact areas on varying schedules. Individual city public works departments have neighborhood collection schedules.
Household Hazardous Waste is household chemicals and similar products such as gasoline, antifreeze, paints, stains, thinners, kerosene, propane, oils, cleaning supplies such as bleach, disinfectants, furniture polish, pool chemicals, thermostats, light ballasts, ant and roach killers, wasp and hornet killers and lawn fertilizers.
MDEQ, in conjunction with Jackson County, will offer collection sites for Household Hazardous Waste beginning next week. The HHW collection sites will be open at the following locations and times:
East Road Department County Barn
10825 Highway 63, Moss Point
Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Old Moss Point Public Works Site
End of McFarlane Street, Moss Point
Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A one-day HHW Collection Event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Singing River Mall in Gautier, Miss.
Building and Vegetative Debris such as roofing shingles, wall board, plaster, aluminum siding, flooring, carpet, damaged furniture, cut-up trees, limbs, leaves and other downed vegetation should be staged together at the curb for collection by the county or city.
White Goods such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, hot water heaters and other damaged bulky metal household appliances should be separated and placed at the curb for collection by the county or city. All food waste must be removed from the white goods, and disposed in the normal household garbage.
Household Garbage such as food wastes, rotting vegetables, fruits, soda bottles, food cans and containers, paper products and other waste should be placed at the curb for collection on normal garbage collection days.
Electronic waste such as computers, laptops, televisions, dvd players, cell phones and other electronic items should be separated and placed at the curb for collection.

Road Advisories in Jackson County
Notice of Martin Bluff Road Closure on February 26
On February 26, 2013 the Jackson County Road Department will temporarily close a section of Martin Bluff Road, from Brookside Drive to Shady Point Circle beginning at 8:00 am till 6:00 pm. This closing is necessary to allow Geological Material Testing for the Road Realignment and Bridge Construction Project scheduled for this summer.
