Just in time for spring cleaning, Jackson County is holding a “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day” this Saturday (April 18) from 8 a.m. - Noon in the Singing River Mall Parking Lot. This free turn-in event is accepting 40 different types of household chemicals and 15 types of electronic waste.

“We’re encouraging all residents to take advantage of this year’s e-waste disposal,” Ronda Powell, Jackson County’s Solid Waste Coordinator explains. “This is the first collection day since 2006 that we’ve been able to accept electronic waste.”

A vast majority of electronic devises have trace amounts of toxic chemicals inside their circuitry such as arsenic, copper, or lead. Just like paint or motor oil, e-waste must be properly disposed and not just thrown away in the trash.

“E-waste is the hazardous waste that’s hidden in plain sight. You can’t see it or smell it, but its there. For example, a standard computer monitor contains at least four pounds of lead. This year’s e-waste collection is possible because of a grant from the Mississippi Dept. of Environmental Quality,” Powell said.

Along with electronic waste, traditional household hazardous waste items are also being accepted. Products labeled POISONOUS, TOXIC, FLAMMABLE or CORROSIVE are generally considered household hazardous waste.

Before loading, remember to keep products in the original containers. Make sure the containers are sealed and not leaking. Transport containers in the trunk or in the back of the vehicle away from passengers. Please, DON’T transport more than five gallons or 50 pounds of hazardous items at one time.

“It’s illegal to discard most of these labeled items in your household trash or down the drain. That’s the reason we have these collection days. Proper disposal of these chemicals and products are important to our health and our environment,” Powell said.

There are several items that will NOT be accepted including: explosive or radioactive materials, medical or biological waste, business waste, household garbage or compressed cylinders. There is a five tire limit as well.

Rain or shine, the collection day will be outside at the east end of the Mall’s front parking lot in Gautier. This event is being funded by Jackson County’s Board of Supervisors, Mississippi DEQ and the cities of Moss Point, Pascagoula, Gautier, and Ocean Springs.
